For Patients

You should allow approximately 40-60 minutes for your initial Neurological appointment. However, each consult and case is uniquely different and as a result consultation times will vary from person to person.

Patient Appointment Guide:

  • A valid GP or specialist referral is required to make an appointment.
  • All referrals are triaged by Dr Baumann before an appointment can be booked.
  • Once triaged, an appointment will be made for a suitable date and time
  • A letter will be mailed to you with your appointment details as well as additional information regarding where we are located and what to bring on the day
  • If you are unable to attend the selected appointment you will need to call the clinic to reschedule. Otherwise we will confirm your appointment 7 days prior, this is generally via an SMS if a mobile number is listed on your referral.

What to bring to the consultation:

  • A list of medications and doses (including supplements) that you take
  • Your pathology results eg blood tests
  •  Your scans relevant to the presenting problem eg. MRI, CTs
  • Other previous test results (eg EEGs, nerve studies)
  • Correspondence and letters from previous doctors if relevant
  • Your Medicare card, DVA Card or Pension Card (if applicable).

What to expect at your appointment?

In order to accurately diagnose and manage your condition, Dr Baumann may order one or more tests/investigations. Depending on your symptoms and medical history, these tests may include:

A CT scan of the brain or spine is a common test that provides a lot of useful information. They are fairly quick and can be requested by your GP prior to your appointment or by Dr Baumann in your consultation.

An MRI (magnetic resonance imaging) is a detailed scan that provides extensive insight about your brain, spinal cord and nerves. MRI scans may be ordered by Dr Baumann at your consultation if she needs further information about your condition. These will be bulk-billed at most radiology clinics. Dr Baumann prefers scans to be completed at North Coast Radiology at St Vincent’s Private Hospital, as she is able to access these quickly and with ease.

Nerve conduction studies

Nerve conduction studies can be helpful in diagnosing conditions affecting the nervous system. This test can be conducted in our clinic by our neuroscientist.

Blood Tests

Dr Baumann may request a series of blood tests to help make a diagnosis. Please note that some blood tests may incur a fee by the Pathology centre.

EEG Test

An EEG (electroencephalography) test measures the electrical activity of the brain. EEG tests are used to determine whether or not you are experiencing seizures (epileptic fits) and what the triggers are for these episodes. This is a non-invasive test which involves the use of electrodes on your scalp.

Please ensure that you continue to see your GP for regular check ups while waiting for an appointment to see Dr Baumann. If you notice a decline in your symptoms, ensure that you see the Emergency Department Team at your closest hospital for assessment and close patient care.

Billing for consultations

All consultation fees are payable on the day of your consultation. We prefer payment to be completed via eftpos but will also accept cash or cheque.
